Visas & immigration

Check work permission before employment or volunteering

Describe the actual work and confirm the necessary status and permission with the host and Department of Employment.

Start with these three things

  1. A work permit concerns duties and the employing company; its supporting documents must be checked separately from a visa application.
  2. Outside Bangkok, enquiries go to the Provincial Employment Office responsible for the workplace.

Planning tips (not official rules)

  1. Do not assume an activity needs no permission simply because it is unpaid, brief or helping a friend. Describe it and ask.

Steps

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Tip Summarise the tasks, location, duration, host and any pay, gratuities or accommodation provided.
  2. For employment, check the Thai employer’s documents alongside your visa and work-permit procedures.
  3. Tip Ask the Department of Employment which application category and permissions apply and when you may begin, then share the answer with the host.
  4. The official e-WorkPermit announcement also describes attending for identity verification and collection after approval.

What to prepare

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • For an enquiry, prepare your passport and visa details, the host’s official name and address, proposed activities and intended start date. Confirm formal documents against the current list for the applicable category.

Where to ask

The Provincial Employment Office responsible for the workplace; the designated office for eligible BOI cases

The Department of Employment FAQ identifies Provincial Employment Offices as the general enquiry point outside Bangkok.

Office hours are not yet confirmed. Confirm with the office before visiting.

Things to watch for

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • Do not use a blogger’s experience in a particular job as permission under your current status. Ask the authority about your actual planned tasks rather than relying on unverified penalties or exceptions.

A visa name alone does not authorise starting work

BOI describes a work permit as legal permission concerning duties, occupation and employer. Its general application guidance also addresses employer documents and occupations prohibited to foreigners. Osaka’s B-visa requirements distinguish employment from business visits.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Explain actual tasks, such as attending meetings, serving customers or teaching. Activities you think of as similar kinds of help may require different information for assessment, so give the office the full details.

Check the activities involved in volunteering

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

The Thai consulate in Fukuoka publishes Non-O volunteer guidance for NGOs, associations and foundations. It is a 2023 edition; check current procedures before relying on its fees or paper-application method.

Tip Ask the host for its official name, supervising authority, planned tasks and the person supporting applications. Separate the existence of a volunteer visa from the work-permission requirements for the actual activities.

Current unpaid-work exceptions, disaster-assistance exemptions and the full prohibited-occupation list remain unverified. Describe your planned activity to the authority and ask whether permission is required.

Check the result of an online application

The Ministry of Labour’s e-WorkPermit introduction describes application, progress tracking, decisions, payment and appointments. It also includes identity verification and permit collection at the selected centre after approval. Submission alone is not completion.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Check the approved activities and period against your contract and actual work before starting. Ask in advance about a change of employer or duties.

A separate route for Japanese trainees and interns

The Japanese Embassy describes a letter for certain Japanese corporate trainees and interns seeking exemption from a Thai staffing-ratio condition when extending their stay. It excludes trainees affiliated with Thai or third-country companies and non-Japanese trainees affiliated with Japanese companies.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Clarify your employer or institution, nationality, training purpose and current visa, then check eligibility with the Embassy or Consulate-General and Thai Immigration. Do not assume this removes general work-permit or permission-to-stay requirements.

Rules can change. Confirm with Thailand’s Department of Employment, Ministry of Labour, and the responsible Provincial Employment Office.
