Visas & immigration

What to check before volunteering in Thailand

Clarify the host organisation and planned activities, then check immigration status and work permission separately before deciding to join.

Start with these three things

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Tip Do not assume that an unpaid activity needs no procedures. Clarify what you will actually do with the host organisation.
  2. Visas and work permits involve separate procedural checks. Check the activities and your status separately.
  3. The Department of Employment’s general FAQ identifies the provincial employment office where the establishment is located as the local contact for applications and enquiries.

Steps

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Tip Confirm the host organisation’s formal name, address, contact person and proposed tasks.
  2. Tip Record the dates, places and whether payment, an honorarium or accommodation will be provided, without leaving out these details.
  3. Tip Present your passport and immigration-status information with the proposed tasks, and ask the Department of Employment what permission is needed and when you may start.
  4. Tip For visa or stay procedures, check with the Thai embassy or consulate handling your application, or with immigration.
  5. Tip Agree your role, contact arrangements, insurance and responsibility for costs with the host. Avoid joining while important points remain unclear.

What to prepare

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  • Tip For an enquiry, prepare passport and current immigration-status information, the host’s name and an activity plan. Determine formal submission requirements from current guidance that applies to your situation.
  • A universal set of documents, fees or processing times for all volunteers remains unverified. Figures in older material are not presented as current conditions.

Where to ask

Thai Ministry of Labour, Department of Employment and relevant provincial employment office / visa and immigration authorities

The Department of Employment’s FAQ directs enquiries outside Bangkok to the provincial employment office where the establishment is located.

The office applicable to an individual activity, its opening hours and appointment requirements remain unverified. Check before visiting.

Things to watch for

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • An organisation’s recruitment notice or previous participants do not establish that your own activity is already authorised.
  • Describe actual tasks, such as customer service, interpreting, teaching or carrying goods, rather than simply saying “helping out”. These examples do not determine whether any particular task is permitted.

Check the host organisation first

The Thai consulate in Fukuoka’s 2023 document describes a Non-O category for volunteering with NGOs, associations and foundations and documents from host and supervising organizations. Check the latest requirements separately for a current application.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Ask who is responsible for the activity, whether someone supports the administrative process, and which tasks should appear in the plan. Obtain an explanation of both the activities and procedures before paying a participation fee.

Do not decide from the word unpaid alone

BOI describes a work permit as a legal document concerning a foreign national’s duties and employing company. Check whether you hold a visa separately from the permission required for specific tasks.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Explain all circumstances, including short activities, helping an acquaintance or work in exchange for accommodation. A note covering location, duration, host and actual tasks makes your enquiry more specific than simply saying that you will not be paid.

Taking part in local mutual help

Current disaster-activity exceptions, unpaid-work exemptions and the full list of tasks foreign nationals may perform remain unverified. Describe the activity to the organization and authority before taking part.

Planning tips (not official rules)

If you want to get involved with a local organisation, first hear about its activities and discuss a manageable role. Do not accept unplanned driving or specialist tasks on the spot. Clarify qualifications, insurance and permission with the person responsible before deciding.

Rules may change. Confirm with the Thai Department of Employment and the embassy, consulate or immigration office handling your visa or stay.
