Learning & community
Finding Japanese community groups and clubs
Explore association activities, membership conditions and questions to ask before joining.

Start with these three things
- The Chiang Mai Japanese Association states aims including social connection, sharing practical knowledge, cultural activities and children’s learning.
- CLL Club has a long-stay advice section and an email newsletter.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Before joining, explain your interests and ask about the next activity and whether you can visit first.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Decide whether you want conversation, exercise, hobbies, parenting connections or practical advice, and which days and locations work.
- The Japanese Association’s official site describes sports, culture, daily-life and education sections.
- Tip Use the official contact to ask about the meeting point, participation fee, registration and cancellation contact before adding an activity to your calendar.
What to prepare
Planning tips (not official rules)
- In an initial enquiry, share only necessary details such as your name, activity of interest, general area and preferred contact method.
- If payment is involved, check the amount, payee, refunds and withdrawal conditions, and retain the instructions and payment record.
Where to ask
Each organisation’s official enquiry contact
The Japanese Association’s official site explains membership procedures, its organisation and responsibilities.
Current office hours are not yet confirmed. Confirm before visiting.
Things to watch for
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Do not mistake a report of a past event in search results for the next event. Check the date and registration deadline.
- Do not widely share your address, passport or bank details at a first meeting. If documents are requested, check their purpose and who will hold them.
Connections through the Japanese Association
Alongside friendship among members, the Association lists exchanging experience about living and welfare, Japan–Thailand exchange, cultural activity and children’s education. It publishes responsibilities by section, including sports, culture and daily life.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Start with a specific interest. For exercise, for example, explain whether you need to avoid strenuous activity, lack equipment or want to bring someone, so the organiser can answer usefully.
Read membership conditions first
The official membership guidance lists age 18 or over, residence in Chiang Mai or neighbouring provinces, a Non-Immigrant visa and a filed Japanese overseas residence notification. Its process calls for payment after the application is accepted and notification received. Ask the office how the published conditions apply to you.
Event access for short-stay visitors, visits by non-members and current dues remain unverified. Ask separately about membership eligibility and joining a particular event.
Starting with an enquiry
CLL Club’s official site offers advice about long stays in Chiang Mai and the Chiang Mai Long Stay newsletter. These can be starting points for gathering information before moving.
Planning tips (not official rules)
When hearing personal experiences, check when the person stayed and their circumstances. Confirm visa, medical and tax decisions through the relevant guide and authority. If a group does not suit you, adjust your participation using its contact and withdrawal arrangements rather than feeling obliged to continue.
Inclusion is not a recommendation.
