Visas & immigration

Before visiting Chiang Mai Immigration

Check the official address and the right procedure, then confirm office hours and additional documents before visiting.

Before visiting immigration: three checks

  1. 1
    Your purpose

Identify the stay, notification or extension question you need to resolve.

  2. 2
    Current instructions

Check the responsible office, eligibility, documents and appointment method.

  3. 3
    Open questions

Confirm unresolved deadlines, bookings and documents with the office.

Start with these three things

  1. The published address is 71 Moo 3, Sanam Bin Road, Suthep, Mueang Chiang Mai, Chiang Mai 50200.
  2. Extensions, re-entry permits, 90-day reporting and accommodation reporting have separate guidance.
  3. Office hours are not yet confirmed. Confirm with the office before visiting.

Steps

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Tip Identify whether your question concerns an extension, 90-day reporting, re-entry or TM30, and write it down with the deadline.
  2. Tip Confirm the service location, visit date, appointment requirement and latest document list with the official office.
  3. Tip Once you receive the formal list, gather originals and copies, and record instructions for collection or a return visit.

What to prepare

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • For discussion, gather your original passport, current permission records, previous receipt, address and questions. This is not a universal list of mandatory submissions.
  • If a representative or family member is involved, check when you must attend personally and which authorisation documents are needed.

Things to watch for

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • Distinguish an estimated processing time from the total time including travel and waiting. Do not treat another province’s stated processing minutes as Chiang Mai’s timings.

Do not choose a destination from the address alone

The address above is published by Chiang Mai Immigration itself. Its service list covers several procedures, including extensions and address-related reporting.

Current service counters, temporary moves and mobile desks remain unverified. Tell Immigration which service you need and check where to go before relying on old maps or opening hours in reviews.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Check the office name against the address before booking transport. Tell anyone accompanying you which procedure you need so it is easier to explain at the entrance.

Use the official service list

The published list has separate entries for retirement extensions, re-entry permits, 90-day reporting and accommodation reports by hosts. Similar document names can serve different purposes; start with the procedure you need.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Save files with the procedure name and retrieval date. Even if you still have the documents from last time, compare them with the office’s current instructions before printing.

Put your questions on one note

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

Tip Note your visa category, permission expiry, intended procedure and planned departure date where relevant. Do not leave passport numbers or addresses visible on a public screen; use them only for enquiries with the responsible office.

Tip Ask whether your documents are sufficient, how recently certificates must have been issued, and when and where to return. Record the date of the response and the office giving it.

Waiting times, daily queue-ticket limits and copy or photo services remain unverified. Avoid scheduling your visit just before reception closes, and prepare what you need in advance.

If your permitted stay has expired: current procedure not verified

The Japanese Consulate-General in Chiang Mai publishes an overstay warning describing re-entry bans. It was posted in 2023 and refers to measures introduced in 2016; do not treat its old table as a current prediction of penalties.

Current penalties, fees and the procedure for reporting or departure in an individual case remain unverified. Contact the responsible Thai Immigration office promptly. Prepare your passport, entry and extension records, and the recorded expiry date for the enquiry.

Rules can change. Confirm the requirements with Chiang Mai Immigration.
