Retirement extensions: conditions, documents and the immigration office
Confirm your visa category and application type before arranging proof of savings or income.

Start with these three things
- An initial retirement Non-O application and an extension of stay inside Thailand use different requirements.
- The published deposit route includes holding periods as well as a minimum balance.
- Chiang Mai’s latest additional documents, application window and current O-A insurance conditions remain unverified. Ask Immigration about your application.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Check your visa category and permission expiry date. Note whether you are seeking an initial change of category or an extension of existing permission.
- Tip Confirm the financial evidence route and holding periods with Immigration before requesting bank certificates.
- Check TM7, passport copies and the financial evidence applicable to your route against Immigration’s basic document guidance.
- Tip Check any instructions or deadlines received after submission against your passport and keep a record.
What to prepare
- The published basic list includes TM7, passport copies, evidence of pension, interest or other income, and, where applicable, a Thai bank balance certificate and account copies. Financial evidence differs by route.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Bring your original passport, previous application records, transaction history and questions for discussion. Do not treat this suggestion as a universal statutory document list.

Things to watch for
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Before a large withdrawal or account change near your application date, confirm the balance-holding conditions. Immigration must assess whether your individual case meets them.
Check the visa category first
Osaka’s retirement Non-O requirements specify an initial stay of three months after entry. Do not reuse this application guidance for Japan as Chiang Mai’s annual-extension checklist.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Check your passport and permission records to establish whether you hold O, O-A, O-X or LTR status. Give the official category as well as the informal term “retirement visa” when asking for advice.
Check deposit holding periods before and after approval
Immigration’s retirement-extension provision assumes age 50 or over and Non-Immigrant status. It lists evidence of monthly income of at least THB 65,000, or THB 800,000 in a Thai bank held for two months before application and three months after approval. Under the deposit route, the balance must then remain at least THB 400,000.
The route combining annual income and deposits also includes deposit-holding conditions. The guidance does not say that arranging funds temporarily is sufficient.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Ask which balance dates and statement period you must demonstrate, then request the corresponding bank documents.
Questions for the office before applying
The government article dates from 2023. O-A insurance conditions for a 2026 extension in Chiang Mai remain unconfirmed. Ask the office handling your application about coverage, insured amount and evidence.
Chiang Mai’s photo size and quantity, bank-certificate issue date, additional address evidence, fee and appointment requirement remain unverified. Check the office’s current list before preparing documents.
Rules can change. Confirm the requirements with Chiang Mai Immigration.
