Opening a Thai bank account: questions for the branch

Explain your residence and intended use, and plan for later updates or a permanent return home.

Start with these three things

  1. Bangkok Bank’s Japanese guidance is for residents of Thailand and says tourists and non-residents cannot open accounts.
  2. The bank does not offer online account opening for foreigners and requires attendance at a branch in Thailand.

Planning tips (not official rules)

  1. Do not extend these conditions to other banks. Explain your status to the bank and branch you want to use.

Steps

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Tip Identify the account’s purpose, such as salary, living costs, pension payments or balance certificates for an extension of stay.
  2. Tip Tell the prospective branch your nationality, residence, visa category and whether you have a work permit, and ask whether you are eligible.
  3. Tip Obtain the branch’s document and fee requirements before preparing them and arranging a personal visit.
  4. Tip If the account is opened, check the account details, branch and registered contact information. Keep the official contact for changes or loss.

What to prepare

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  • Tip For discussion, prepare your passport, visa and stay-permission details, Thai address, working mobile phone and intended use. This is not a universal statutory account-opening checklist.
  • The full document list, minimum deposit and individual Chiang Mai branch conditions for foreign applicants remain unverified. Contact the branch before visiting.

Where to ask

The branch where you wish to open an account

Bangkok Bank recommends a branch near home or work and says some procedures require visiting the account-opening branch.

Branch hours are not yet confirmed. Confirm with the branch before visiting.

Things to watch for

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • If insurance or investments are proposed as an account-opening condition, ask whether they are separate products, whether purchase is optional, and what fees and cancellation conditions apply before deciding.

Foreign applicants do not all have the same conditions

The checked Bangkok Bank Japanese FAQ specifies residents of Thailand and excludes tourists. Its Japanese homepage also says residents of Japan cannot open accounts at its head office or branches in Thailand. Do not treat success stories from older travel accounts as current conditions.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Explain your current residence and purpose first. Until eligibility is confirmed, avoid tying a large transfer or extension-of-stay schedule to an assumed account-opening date.

Check mobile-banking enrolment separately

The bank says new internet-banking enrolments ended on 7 July 2025 and initial mobile-banking applications are taken at branches. Check the current method even if older guidance describes applying online.

Planning tips (not official rules)

If adding a card or app, ask about annual fees, limits, identity checks and changing devices. Do not give a helper your PIN or verification codes; ask the branch how to complete setup yourself.

Passport renewal, moving and returning home permanently

The bank’s deposit-account guidance requires a passport-update notification at the opening branch. Its Tokyo and Osaka branches do not handle Thai-account procedures, so check what must be done in Thailand before renewing documents or returning home.

Its guidance asks customers returning home permanently to close the account, personally at the opening branch in Thailand with the required originals.

Planning tips (not official rules)

List pending incoming payments, automatic payments, cards, apps and any certificates you need, then discuss them with the branch. If the account supports financial evidence for a long stay, also check Immigration’s conditions before changes.

Rules can change. Confirm with the branch where your account is opened.

Inclusion is not a recommendation. This is one example of official bank guidance that was checked.
