Transfers from Japan, currency exchange and ATM fees
Compare fees, exchange rates and the amount that actually arrives.

Start with these three things
- Use banks or licensed transfer and exchange providers in Thailand. Cash exchange and international transfers are separate regulated activities.
- International transfers may incur receiving-bank and intermediary charges. Do not compare only the sender’s fee.
- At ATMs, check both ATM and card charges. Dynamic currency conversion (DCC) into yen may include conversion costs.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Compare the baht received for the same total yen payment, and record the quotation time.
- Match the recipient’s official account name, number, bank and SWIFT details with the receiving bank’s instructions. Bangkok Bank lists these among the information needed for a transfer.
- Tip Before use, ask about access to the sending account while living overseas, extra documents, limits, arrival time and cancellation or recall conditions.
- Tip After the completion screen, check the amount and date credited to the receiving account and keep the transfer record.
What to prepare
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Prepare the quote, account details obtained from the receiving bank and contacts for both sides of the transfer. Check identity documents against the selected provider’s current guidance.
- Keep your own record of the source of funds, such as pension, salary or living expenses, and receipt and transfer dates.

Things to watch for
- Bangkok Bank explains that additional foreign-bank charges may reduce the amount received even with OUR, where the sender bears fees.
- Visa recommends declining DCC and reporting the issue to the card issuer if rates or markups are not shown or the customer is pressured to accept.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- If the sender or account-holder names differ, ask the provider how to proceed instead of making assumptions.
Yen paid and baht received
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
Tip Compare transfer, receiving and intermediary fees alongside the exchange rate. Ask whether the amount received is guaranteed or estimated. For a fixed baht obligation such as rent, obtain a quote that will deliver the required amount.
Bangkok Bank uses its telegraphic-transfer buying rate when converting incoming foreign currency to baht. Other banks may use different conditions; read your receiving bank’s guidance.
Cash exchange and ATMs
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
Tip For cash exchange, state the currency and denominations and confirm the actual amount you will receive. If a displayed rate is hard to compare, ask for the amount after fees.
Visa requires DCC screens to show the amounts in local and card currencies, the exchange rate and extra charges, and to let customers accept or decline.
Tip Compare the ATM receipt with the card statement. Use your card terms and the current screen rather than assuming one bank or card is always cheapest.
Transfer records
Planning tips (not official rules)
Keep the purpose, original receipt of funds, transfer record and final credit together for each transfer. This helps answer later banking or tax questions. See the foreign-income and tax-filing articles for tax preparation.
Confirm fees and eligibility with the provider before authorizing a transfer.
