Visas & immigration
Check your re-entry permit before leaving Thailand
Before travelling back to Japan, compare your current status, planned departures, return date and permission expiry.

Start with these three things
- A re-entry permit’s validity is tied to your existing permission to stay.
- The published procedure lists fees of THB 1,000 for single re-entry and THB 3,800 for multiple re-entry.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Before leaving, confirm whether your visa category requires a re-entry permit.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Check your stay expiry, departure date, return date and any further planned departures together.
- Tip Tell the office whether you already have a valid permit or a visa with multiple-entry conditions, and confirm whether this application is necessary.
- The published application procedure uses TM8, your passport and current permission to stay.
- When receiving the permit, check its type and expiry date, and keep the receipt.
What to prepare
- The published Immigration procedure lists TM8, a valid passport or travel document, and current permission to stay.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Gather your itinerary and existing permission records. Confirm photo size and quantity, copies and any additional documents against Chiang Mai’s latest instructions.

Things to watch for
Planning tips (not official rules)
- If you have already left Thailand or a deadline is close, explain your situation to Immigration rather than deciding eligibility from a general article.
Which expiry date does it preserve?
The procedure ties the re-entry stamp’s validity to your current permission to stay. Obtaining it does not extend the original stay expiry. Compare that date with your planned return.
Planning tips (not official rules)
If an extension and a trip home are close together, ask which procedure comes first and whether an existing permit needs a change.
Single and multiple re-entry
Tak Immigration’s published material lists THB 1,000 for single re-entry and THB 3,800 for multiple re-entry. These are Immigration fees, not an agent’s charges. Issuing a payment receipt is also part of the procedure.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Summarise whether you plan one trip or several departures before your permission expires, and ask which type you need. If using an agent, request separate figures for Immigration fees and service charges.
Prepare before departure day
The location, hours and same-day conditions of Chiang Mai Airport’s re-entry permit desk remain unverified. Ask Immigration before departure; do not assume a permit will certainly be available at the airport.
BOI lists exemption from re-entry permits as an LTR benefit. Check your category first rather than applying the same procedure to all long-stay visas.
Planning tips (not official rules)
When your passport is returned, check your name, passport number, permitted entries and expiry immediately, and keep a copy. Check your return date again if your plans change.
Rules can change. Confirm the requirements with Chiang Mai Immigration.
