Start with these three things

  1. In a dangerous situation such as a robbery, prioritize your safety and do not put yourself at risk by resisting.
  2. If you lose a Japanese passport, you need to report it to Thai police and complete procedures at a Japanese mission.
  3. After receiving a replacement Japanese passport or an emergency travel document for returning to Japan, there are also Thai immigration procedures.

Steps

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  1. Move away from danger and report the incident to police.
  2. Tip List the missing items and where and when you last saw them. Ask the relevant providers through official channels about suspending cards or other services.
  3. If you lose a Japanese passport, report the loss or theft to Thai police and obtain a certificate.
  4. People who have lost a Japanese passport should consult a Japanese mission about a replacement passport or a travel document for returning to Japan.
  5. Keep the original police certificate and the Japanese mission's support letter for the immigration procedures after receiving the replacement document.

What to prepare

"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.

  • Tip Note the date, time, place, item descriptions and circumstances to explain to police.
  • The procedures for a Japanese passport list a Thai police certificate of loss or theft.
  • Tip If you still have a copy or image of the Japanese passport, prepare it for reference. Check evidence of nationality, photographs and other required items with the Japanese mission handling the application.

Where to ask

Reception hours are not yet confirmed. Check with the office before visiting.

Things to watch for

  • After receiving a new passport or other document from a Japanese mission, immigration procedures are also required.

Planning tips (not official rules)

  • Keep police documents separate from submissions to card providers and insurers, and organize originals, copies and submission dates.

Preparing to explain the incident to police

Planning tips (not official rules)

Distinguish facts from guesses: when you last saw the item, where you noticed it missing and what you witnessed. Bring model numbers, photographs or purchase records if available.

Check your name, passport number and incident details on documents you receive. Ask for an explanation of anything unclear, language help if needed and a way to follow up.

Discussing a Japanese passport and your travel plans

Guidance for people who have lost a Japanese passport describes applying at a Japanese mission for a new passport or a travel document for returning to Japan. Discuss which to apply for together with your itinerary and required documents.

Planning tips (not official rules)

Give the office your dates and transit points if you have a return flight or travel to another country planned. Discuss rebooking or itinerary changes after clarifying the travel documents and immigration procedures.

If you lose a passport issued by another country, check replacement procedures with that country's embassy or consulate. Do not use the Japanese mission's document list as if it applies to you.

If your wallet or device is also missing

Planning tips (not official rules)

Check suspension and recovery procedures through official bank, card, mobile and major-account services. Even when using another device, operate it yourself and do not give anyone your PINs or verification codes.

Keep reference numbers and responses in one note. If you intend to claim insurance, ask the insurer about required evidence and reporting deadlines.

Procedures change. Confirm the current steps with Thai police, immigration and, for a Japanese passport, the Japanese mission.
