International driving permits in Thailand
For international permits obtained using a Japanese driving licence: check the entry date and validity of both licences. Ask the land transport office about long-term residence or re-entry.

Start with these three things
- The Japanese Embassy explains that Thailand accepts international driving permits conforming to the Geneva Convention.
- The general period is within one year of landing and within the permit’s own validity.
- If the underlying Japanese licence expires or is revoked, the international permit loses effect even before its printed expiry.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Check that the permit conforms to the Geneva Convention, its issuing authority and its expiry date.
- Compare your landing date in Thailand with the permit’s expiry.
- Check that your Japanese driving licence remains valid.
- Tip Ask the issuing office whether your vehicle category is covered, and ask your insurer about driving eligibility and cover.
- Tip If you intend to live in Thailand, seek advice about a Thai licence well before your permit expires.
What to prepare
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Check the validity of both the international permit and the underlying Japanese licence.
- Tip Have records showing your landing date, such as your passport, ready for an enquiry. This is preparation for checking eligibility, not a complete list of documents you must carry while driving in Thailand.
- Japan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises carrying a conventional Japanese driving-licence card when driving abroad. Do not prepare using only a My Number card holding licence information.
Where to ask
Japanese driving-licence centre / Thai Department of Land Transport
Japanese international-permit applications go to the public safety commission responsible for your place of residence. Check the specific office and hours with the licence centre.
Thailand’s current treatment of long-term residents, re-entry and the complete documents to carry remain unverified. Ask the Department of Land Transport.
Things to watch for
- A remaining validity period on the international permit does not override expiry or revocation of the Japanese licence.
- Treatment after re-entry or during long-term residence remains unverified. Ask the Thai Department of Land Transport about your circumstances.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- A rental company agreeing to hand over a vehicle does not establish that you meet driving or insurance conditions.
Separate validity dates
The Embassy’s explanation requires both the period counted from landing and the permit’s own validity to be met. A Japanese-issued permit also loses effect if the underlying domestic licence expires or is revoked. Check all relevant dates.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Compare your passport entry record, international permit and Japanese licence. Ask the issuing office about any unclear dates or entries.
Applications during a visit to Japan
Japan’s National Police Agency explains that overseas residents may apply using the address where they are staying during a temporary visit to Japan. Relatives or others can also apply by proxy for someone already abroad, but the original Japanese licence must be presented. Ask the licence centre about the process, including sending the original.
Long-term residence
Current driving rules for long-term residence and repeated re-entry remain unverified. Ask Thailand’s Department of Land Transport about your entry history and residence before relying on the general treaty explanation.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Tell the Thai Department of Land Transport your immigration status, entry date, licence-issuing country and intended vehicle category. Reconsider plans to drive until unclear conditions are resolved.
Rules can change. Confirm with the Thai Department of Land Transport and, for Japanese applications, the relevant Japanese driving-licence centre.
