Pharmacies and medicines in Thailand: buying and bringing medicines from Japan

Preparing for a pharmacy consultation and checking import conditions by active ingredient.

Start with these three things

  1. The Thai FDA has announced a licensed-pharmacy search service. Discuss medicines with a pharmacist.
  2. Guidance generally permits travellers to carry up to a 30-day supply of ordinary medicines for personal use. Controlled medicines have separate conditions.

  1. Before bringing prescribed medicines from Japan, identify the active ingredients as well as brand names and check their Thai FDA classification.

Steps

  1. Tip Use packaging, your medicine record or prescription to list ingredients, strengths and instructions as far as possible.
  2. Tip Tell the pharmacist about symptoms, current medicines, allergies and relevant circumstances such as pregnancy.
  3. Tip Before receiving the medicine, ask for an explanation of its name, how to take it, precautions and storage.
  4. For medicines carried from Japan, check the FDA categories for ordinary medicines, psychotropic substances and narcotics, and the documents and permits required for each.
  5. Tip Working back from your departure date, discuss any advance permit and prescription evidence with the FDA and your prescribing doctor.

  • Depending on their classification, controlled medicines require prescription evidence, prior permission or other documents. Check the relevant FDA category.
  • Tip Keep purchase records with the medicine information, and ask the pharmacist to explain any label you do not understand.

Things to watch for

  • Do not apply the carriage rules for ordinary personal medicines directly to psychotropic substances or narcotics.
  • The FDA's remote pharmacy consultation service operates under the supervision of licensed pharmacies and pharmacists. It is not the same as ordinary sales through social media.

If the same product is unavailable, ask the pharmacist how an alternative differs from your prescription. Do not substitute a medicine yourself because its name or appearance is similar; check with the prescribing doctor when needed.

Ask how long to use it, when to consult a doctor, whether it can be taken with your other medicines and whether effects such as drowsiness require care in daily life. Do not share your medicine with relatives or friends.

Where to check licensing

The FDA explains that Mor Prom's nearby-pharmacy feature shows licensed pharmacy locations and pharmacist services. Registration requirements for foreign users remain unverified.

If you cannot use the app, consider checking official FDA licensing information and signs at the pharmacy, and ask when a pharmacist is available in person.

Distinguish personal carriage from shipping

The FDA guidance checked here concerns medicines brought in by the traveller personally. Quantities and documents must be checked for the relevant classification.

For a long stay, discuss follow-up care and continuing prescriptions locally before your medicine runs out. Check shipping or carriage by relatives separately rather than assuming the same rules as personal carriage apply.
