Bringing pets to Thailand and finding veterinary care
Plan pet travel, requirements for returning to Japan and questions for a local animal hospital.

Start with these three things
- For dogs or cats travelling from Japan, check both Japan’s export inspection and Thailand’s import conditions.
- Thailand is outside Japan’s designated animal-quarantine regions, so a return also needs advance preparation.
- The complete current Thai import-document list for departure from Japan remains unverified. Tell quarantine staff the animal species and arrival airport when checking.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Summarise the departure country, arrival airport, connections, animal species, age, health history and existing certificates.
- Japan’s Animal Quarantine Service asks travellers to confirm destination requirements with the relevant authority before applying for export inspection.
- Tip Ask the airline first whether it can carry your pet, and discuss both arrival and return plans with the veterinarian and quarantine services.
What to prepare
- The return-to-Japan process involves identification, vaccination, antibody-test and government-certificate information.
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Compare identification numbers and owner names across records, and keep originals separately from readable copies.
Where to ask
Animal Quarantine Station at the arrival airport; your veterinary clinic
Official Thai consular guidance lists an Animal Quarantine Station at Chiang Mai International Airport.
Quarantine reception hours for your flight are not yet confirmed. Confirm with the station before travelling.
Things to watch for
Planning tips (not official rules)
- Check with quarantine and the airline before buying tickets. Do not assume cabin carriage or a connection is permitted.
- Ask your regular veterinarian about vaccination or treatment changes and medication during the flight.
Before entering Thailand
Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development describes checking the health certificate and animal at the arrival point, then issuing import permission where conditions are met. Begin by obtaining the conditions applicable to your animal before departure.
The complete current vaccination requirements, deadlines and fees for dogs or cats travelling from Japan remain unverified. Ask quarantine officials; do not treat USDA documents in US-departure guidance as requirements for travel from Japan.
Think about returning before you leave
Japan’s general procedure for non-designated regions requires at least 180 days between the antibody-test blood sample and arrival, and notification at least 40 days before planned arrival. Exceptions can involve continued vaccinations or repeat tests; ask quarantine staff to review the individual records.
Planning tips (not official rules)
If you may return to Japan, organise vaccination, blood-sampling and certificate dates chronologically now. Plan with the destination Animal Quarantine Service rather than deciding the required sequence or validity periods yourself.
Find routine veterinary care
Chiang Mai University’s Mae On Animal Hospital describes small-animal outpatient and inpatient care, preventive care, testing and surgery. Its address is 1 Moo 3, Ban Sahakon, Mae On, Chiang Mai 50130.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Before visiting, ask about the animal species, symptoms, booking, consultation language and payment, and bring previous records. Check night reception and transport separately. Japanese-language service and travel-certificate preparation remain unverified.
Confirm travel requirements with Thailand’s DLD Animal Quarantine Station and Japan’s Animal Quarantine Service, and health matters with a veterinarian.
Inclusion is not a recommendation.
