Alcohol sale hours and Buddhist holiday restrictions in Thailand
Where to check the 2026 changes to sale hours, prohibited-sale dates and rules affecting individual premises.

Start with these three things
- Thailand's Department of Disease Control stated on 29 May 2026 that general alcohol sale hours are 11:00–24:00.
- Exceptions to sale hours apply to certain airport passenger buildings, legally regulated entertainment venues and hotels.
- The full current calendar of Buddhist holidays and the exceptions that apply remain unverified. This guide alone cannot establish whether sales are permitted on a particular date.
Steps
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- Tip Identify the date and the place where you intend to buy alcohol.
- Check the DDC notice giving general sale hours on ordinary days as 11:00–24:00.
- Tip For Buddhist holidays or other special dates, check the latest DDC notices and the premises' signs.
- Tip Even at a hotel or airport, ask which conditions apply to the particular outlet.
- Tip Arrange a way home that does not involve driving after drinking.
What to prepare
Planning tips (not official rules)
- When asking, give the date, business name, address and whether you mean retail purchase or consumption on the premises.
- Check the publication date of online articles. Do not decide whether sales are permitted from a headline alone.
Where to ask
Thailand Department of Disease Control / Office of the Alcohol Control Committee / the premises concerned
Reception hours are not yet confirmed. Check with the office before visiting.
Things to watch for
"Tip" marks a planning suggestion, not an official rule.
- General sale hours and notices setting prohibited-sale dates are separate matters. The DDC's legislation index lists them separately.
- Tip Do not assume that every hotel sells alcohol at any time or that every airport outlet qualifies for an exception. Check with the outlet you will use.
- Current detailed rules on age limits, prohibited locations, election-related restrictions and permitted drinking hours remain unverified. Check the rules applying on the date of your visit.
Do not rely on an old timetable
The DDC's official explanation dated 29 May 2026 gives sale hours of 11:00–24:00. Use the dated official page when planning a purchase.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Ask the outlet when you can buy alcohol there on the specific date. Make sure the answer concerns alcohol sales, rather than simply the restaurant's opening hours.
Read exceptions together with the premises conditions
The DDC lists exceptions including passenger buildings at airports handling international flights, entertainment venues operating within their legally permitted hours, and hotels under the Hotel Act. This does not give the same exception to every retailer.
Planning tips (not official rules)
Ask about food and beverage service when booking. If staff say sales are not permitted, ask about non-alcoholic options rather than arguing.
Buddhist holiday rules need a further check
The DDC's official legislation index includes notices on prohibited-sale dates. The full Buddhist holiday calendar and exceptions for eligible premises remain unverified. Check the planned date against official information and with the outlet.
Planning tips (not official rules)
For a gathering, give the venue the date in advance and prepare a meal plan that does not depend on alcohol being available.
Rules change frequently. Confirm the current position with Thailand's Department of Disease Control / Office of the Alcohol Control Committee.
